FGM UAV ROTOR BLADE

Ongoing research project in collaboration with Singapore Center for 3D Printing,
FUNCTIONALY GRADED MATERIAL
FGM stands for functionally graded material. It refers to a class of advanced materials whose composition, microstructure or porosity changes across their volume.
BIOMIMICRY
Most structures found in nature are FGMs. This project, in particular, was inspired by insect wings which exhibit a spanwise stiffness gradient. They are stiffer near the root and become more flexible toward the ends.

MANUFACTURING METHOD

APPLICATION TO F1
The technology is still in the developmental stage; however, it has the potential to be applied in different industries. For example, the front wing of F1 cars can be manufactured using functionally graded materials to increase strength and stiffness near the root and durability near the tip where it is susceptible to damage.
